Importance of a Clean Gutter

Tuesday, February 26th, 2019 by Jodi Eisenhour

Gutters collect the rain running off the roof and channel it, with proper slopes, to downspouts that carry it to the ground and away from your siding, windows, doors and foundation. Needles, seeds, small bits of bark, twigs and leaves fall on a never-ending cycle. After each rainstorm, asphalt from roof shingles runs off into your gutters, inevitably causing them to clog. Debris piled up above the falshing or shingle line can hold moisture on the fascia boards. This moisture can cause dry rot, ice dams and a variety of other problems.

Clogged gutters can cause:

  • Basement flooding
  • Foundation cracking and settlement
  • Soil erosion
  • Dry-rot on fascia boards, soffit, and roof
  • Paint damages
  • Window, doors and siding damages
  • Fire damage in dry, high wind, fire-prone areas

The importance of maintaining these gutters regardless of what type of gutter system you have, gutters and roofs need maintenance. If you have open rain gutters, they should be cleaned at least twice a year (Spring/Fall). Depending on weather conditions and environment, additional cleaning may be necessary. If you also have a low-sloped roof, even a leaf protection system cannot prevent debris from accumulating on your roof, so with or without a leaf protection system, roof maintenance is required. A simple cleaning with a broom or blower is all that is necessary. However, cleaning out your gutters and brushing debris from your roof, though an important task, is not always an easy one. Climbing and moving ladders and working several feet off the ground can be dangerous. If you cannot do this safetly, please give Middle Creek Roofing a call and we will schedule for one of our licensed, train technician to come to your home and take care of your needs.
