How to hang Christmas lights without damaging your roof.

Everyone loves Christmas lights, right? Nothing kicks off the holiday season better than seeing your neighborhood all lit up in the evenings. While hanging those holiday lights can be tricky, here are some tips on how to hang those lights without damaging your roof.

AVOID USING NAILS AND STAPLES

Nails and staples are a simple way to be able to get your lights hung quickly but they can cause some severe damage. Anytime you staple or nail directly through your roofing material it creates holes in the materials allowing water to seep through and over the course of time this can lead to mold, mildew and or leaking issues and ultimately shorten the lifespan of your roofing system.

Instead of nails or staples try using Christmas Light hanging clips. These will allow you to hang lights directly on the roof without causing any damage or creating any holes that may potentially let water into your home. These types of fasteners can usually be found at your local hardware store and a fairly inexpensive.

Christmas Light Clips make hanging lights super easy! People often default to using nails and staple guns and if you do decide to use these options just be sure to not nail or staples into your roofing materials.

Determine whether to attach lights to gutters or shingles

When attaching lights to your roof, you have to decide whether to install them on your gutters or the shingles. If you choose to hang your lights on your gutter system, it is best not to attach anything additional (like anchoring any of your inflatables to the gutter).

Clear Out Leaves from Gutters before installing lights

Before installing lights on your gutters, it is best to remove any leaves or debris from the gutters first. If you do not and leaves get stuck in your lights, they will be more difficult to remove after the holidays.

Walk Lightly on Your Roof if you must

If you do have to walk on your roof it is always best to tread lightly. Walking heavily on your roof can cause damage and potentially cause leaks in areas of your home.
